Rough Draft: This is a Library in a Public High School in San Jose, California. This is one of my favorite projects. We did "surgery" on a building built in the late 1950s, to re-vivify the space. It had originally been designed as a music facility. The music department had been moved to another building. We worked with existing shear walls at the center bays of the building, added HVAC in a loft above a focused reading/study area, and created two large reading rooms on either side. At the main entry lobby is the librarian's office which has views over the entire library and the main entry. We created a space where students could find options to study together, alone or to just hang out near books. Taking an existing building and keeping it alive for a new purpose is what Bartos Architecture specializes in.
